The chapel was built for Roger II of Sicily in 1132 and consecrated in 1143, and is decorated with Byzantine mosaics. It has a sanctuary dedicated to St Peter and muqarnas in the nave ceiling, being a marriage of Norman, Byzantine and Islamic Fatimid architectural styles.
