Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele, an opera house designed in Neoclassical style by Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile and Ernesto Basile and opened in 1897, on the Piazza Verdi in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The theatre is the largest in Italy and reopened in 1997 after restoration. Palermo was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians, and was settled by the Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans.
