The Puerta del Sol or Gate of the Sun was built in the 13th century by the Knights Hospitaller to access the medina. Above the horseshoe arch between the two towers is a relief showing the descent of the Virgin Mary, 666, to impose the chasuble on St Ildefonso, Archbishop of Toledo, as a reward for his defence of his chastity under the Sun and Moon from which the name derives. Toledo is a former capital of Spain, and cultural centre where Jews, Muslims and Christians co-existed.
