Old and new buildings are mixed together in the jumbled cityscape behind the promenade. Tangier, the 'White City', gateway to North Africa, a port on the Straits of Gibraltar where the Meditaerranean meets the Atlantic is an ancient city where many cultures, Phoenicians, Berbers, Portuguese and Spaniards have all left their mark.
