Terracotta figurines of two gladiators, Roman, 1st-2nd CE.
The distinctive small shields of this pair of gladiotors show that the duel is between two heavily-armed combatants, a hoplomachus with a Greek circular shield and a Thraex, with a thracian small reactangular shield. By the Imperial period around a dozen clearly distinct "armatura", or gladiatorial categories, existed, with different armour and weapons.
