Black
History Month
February is Black History Month, a time
to focus on African-American contributions to American society.
From African origins, slavery and emancipation, to the Harlem
Renaissance and the Civil Rights movement, black Americans
are an integral part of the Nation's history.
The national recognition of African-American
achievement dates from the 1920s when cultural historian,
professor, world-traveler, and son of freed slaves Carter
G. Wilson (1875-1950) successfully lobbied educational institutions
and publications to record and honor the contributions of
notable black Americans. "Negro History Week," as
it was named, was set for the second week of February in deference
to the births of Abraham Lincoln (1809-65), Frederick Douglass
(1818-95), W.E.B. Dubois (1868-1963), and the anniversary
of the incorporation of the N.A.A.C.P (1909). In 1976, this
week- long commemoration was extended to the entire month
of February emphasizing an appreciation of African-American
history, achievement and contribution.
