The
ancient Greeks believed that the Olympic Games were born from
a deadly challenge. Oinimaos, King of Pisa, decreed that anyone
who wished to marry his daughter Hippodameia must first defeat
him in a chariot race. Twelve suitors failed and met their
death, but Pelops, with the help of the king's daughter, defeated
Oinimaos and claimed the prize. He then founded the Olympic
Games to thank the god Zeus for his victory.
